Here is a stab at the railroads in Lafayette in the 1880s. The subject is
made difficult because the railroads kept changing their names.
Railroads in Lafayette in 1880s
1. The first railroad was the Lafayette and Indianapolis, completed in 1852.
Later it was called the Indianapolis, Cincinnati and Lafayette Railroad
(IC&L). It merged with others in 1889 to form the Cleveland, Cincinnati,
Chicago and St. Louis Railway (The Big Four), later NYC
2. The New Albany and Salem was second to arrive and put tracks down 5th
Street in 1853. Later it was called the Louisville, New Albany and Chicago.
It was also called the Chicago, Indianapolis & Louisville Railroad (the
Monon).
3. The Lake Erie, Wabash, and St. Louis arrived about 1854, nicknamed the
Wabash Valley Road. It ran to St. Louis through Attica, and north to
Detroit.
4. The Lake Erie and Western arrived from the east through Dayton in 1878,
later the New York, Chicago & St. Louis Railroad Company (the Nickel Plate
[NKP]). It continued on northwest from Lafayette, to Chicago, on the tracks
of the Big Four.
