HAD PROSPEROUS LIFE IN WEST
Samuel Bream in Telling of Recent Western Trip Describes Early Life of Relatives in
Indiana. Enjoyable Trip.
Samuel Bream and W.E. Bream, of Biglerville, have just returned from a visit to the home
of their aged uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Gabriel Myers of Tippecanoe County, Indiana.
Mr. Bream in telling of his trip writes for The News:
"My uncle and aunt are in apparent good health. They moved from Adams County 48
years ago with a capital of $2000; bought a tract of land for the full amount. It was
entirely covered with timberland with the exception of a few acres on which was a log
cabin, with all the rooms in one. Since then he has cleared all the land with the
exception of a few ravines; has built a new house and barn; and have a family of four sons
and two daughters. All live in the same county.
"Mr. Myers has distributed a portion of his wealth to his children. Had he not done
this he would now be worth $15,000. Some think he made a mistake in buying the timberland
as timberland at that time was not at all valuable. At that time he could have purchased
cleared land at from $40 to $50 per acre.
"This information our cousin gave us while taking us a rapid automobile spin through
the country. He said that the same land could not now be purchased for $200 per acre.
The corn on that land is the very best and all other crops are in a similar thriving
condition. It is a very desirable county in which to live."
(Note: There is more to the article but it tells of their trip home to Pennsylvania so I
did not include it.)
Gabriel Myers Obituary

Gettysburg Compiler, pg. 2
Gettysburg, Pennsylvania
GABRIEL MYERS, a native, and for many years a resident of Adams County, and a well-known
citizen of Tippecanoe County, Ind., was found dead in a field about forty rods from his
home, two miles north of Petit, Ind., at about 5 o'clock, Dec. 14.
Mr. Myers left the house shortly after 4 o'clock to bring the cow. He was gone longer
than usual and his wife called to him, but he did not respond. She then sent her son
Calvin to look for him and he found him lifeless. Death is supposed to have resulted from
heart failure. In the fall he received a slight abrasion over the left eye.
Mr. Myers was born in Adams County, Oct. 25, 1825, and was the last of a family of five
sisters and one brother, of the northern part of the county. They were Geo. Myers, Mrs.
Mary Chambers, Mrs. Margaret Bream, Mrs. Harriet Bream, Mrs. Susan Dull, and Mrs. Lizzie
Parker. He went to Indiana in 1866 and was a well-to-do farmer. Mr. Myers was a member
of the United Brethren Church. He was married sixty-one years ago to Mary Slaybaugh of
near Center Mills, who with the following children survive: John H. Myers and Mrs. Levi
Shively of Lafayette, William E. Myers of Monitor, Mrs. J.A. Sensenbaugh, Calvin A. and
G.E. Myers, all of Tippecanoe County, Ind.
