PIONEER VETERAN PASSES
George Staley Was A Nebraskan Fifty-Eight Years
Fairbury, Neb., Nov. 9--George S. Staley, Civil war veteran and resident of Nebraska since
1870, died here Wednesday evening, following a paralytic stroke. He was born in 1846 in
Tippecanoe County, Ind., and in 1863 he enlisted in the Union army, Twelfth Indiana
cavalry, serving until the close of the war. In 1870 he married Alice A. Hannum in
Marshall County, Ill., and they left for Nebraska the same year, settling in Beatrice on
Sept. 7. Later they homesteaded in Saline County, retiring to Western in 1907. Eight
years ago they moved to Fairbury. Mr. Staley is survived by his widow and nine sons and
daughters.
