>Now, what can I do with the information as to the group he fought
with? I am sure others on the list would like to know...>>
--------------------------------------
Pam and everyone,
One way to get started is by checking for publications that might list
your guy's unit and see what info you can get there. My Henry Gates
served from OH and is listed in the "Rosters of Ohio Soldiers in War of
1812." An excellent how-to resource is the book "War of 1812 Genealogy"
by George K. Schweitzer. This book can be find through most major
genealogy catalogs.
You might also want to check the 1812 pension index to see if he had a
pension. If you don't have access to one, I can check the one at TIPCOA
next time I go (hopefully soon, it's been much too long!). My Henry
Gates didn't have one, and the only records I got from the National
Archives were his muster records and pay records. Those weren't much
help. So to find out what he did during the war, I checked the pension
index to see if any of the other men in his unit had pensions and found
only four. I sent for all four and two of them told me what I wanted to
know (they fought at Fort Meigs).
Also you could write the National Archives to see if he had a bounty
land warrant and application. I didn't do that, but got lucky when
another Gates researcher who found me on the GATES maillist, "just
happened!" to have my Henry's application for bounty land in her files.
What luck! It gave me his exact birthdate, which I didn't have before.
There are also a few websites on the War of 1812. You can find links to
some of them on the INGenWeb Links site:

Hope I've been a little bit of help. If any of you need a lookup in the
pension index, just let me know.
