This Indenture made this thirteenth day of March in the year of our Lord
one thousand eight hundred and thirty eight between MICHAEL HARE
overseer of the poor of Washington Township Tippecanoe County State of
Indiana of the one part, and WILLIAM CRESSE of the State and County
aforesaid of the other part Witnesseth that the said overseer has put
placed and bound and by these presents puts places and binds ANDREW
JENKINS a poor boy aged sixteen years and three months as an apprentice
tot he said WILLIAM CRESSE to be taught the art and occupation of a
Farmer and to live with and serve the said WILLIAM CRESSE as an
apprentice for the term of four years and nine months from this date
that is to say until he the said ANDREW JENKINS shall arrive at the age
of twenty one years of if the said WILLIAM CRESSE shall so long live and
the said overseer does by these presents give unto the said WILLIAM
CRESSE all the right power and authority over the said ANDREW JENKINS
and his service during the said term which by the law of this state a
Master has in and over a lawfully indented apprentice and the said
WILLIAM CRESSE in consideration thereof doth upon his part covenant
promise and agree to and with the said overseer and his successors in
office and each and every of them and with the said ANDREW JENKINS to
give him the said apprentice nine months schooling and to train him to
habits of industry and morality and during the term of his service and
to provide and allow to him sufficient meat, drink, washing, lodging and
apparel and all other things necessary for an apprentice during his said
term of apprenticeship. And the said WILLIAM CRESSE further covenants
and agrees to pay to the said apprentice at the expiration of his
aforesaid term of service one hundred dollars. In Witness whereof the
said parties have hereunto set their hands and seals on the day and year
above written.
