This Indenture Witnesseth that JOHN D. FARMER and LOYAL FAIRMAN the
overseers of the Poor for the county of Tippecanoe and State of Indiana
hat put and placed and by these presents doth put and bind out GEORGE W.
REED. And the said JOHN D. FARMER and LOYAL FAIRMAN doth hereby put
place and bind out the said GEORGE as an apprentice to GEORGE CARDER to
learn the art, trade, and mistery of Boot and Shoe making which he the
said GEORGE CARDER now with the said GEORGE W. REED to dwell with and
serve the said GEORGE CARDER after the manner of an apprentice from the
day of the date hereof until the fifth day of April in the year of our
Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty one at which time the said
apprentice if he is living will be Twenty one years of age during all
which time the said apprentice shall well and faithfully serve his
master, keep his secrets and every where at all times readily obey his
lawful commands he shall do no damage to his said Master, nor willfully
suffer any to be done by others and if any to his knowledge be intended
he shall give his said Master reasonable notice thereof. He shall not
waste the goods of his said master nor lend them unlawfully to any, he
shall not play at cards, dice or any other unlawful games. He shall not
contract matrimony during the said term, he shall not haunt or frequent
taverns, tipling houses, or places of gaming. He shall not absent
himself from the service of his said master but shall in all things and
at all time carry and behave as a good and faithful apprentice ought
during the whole term aforesaid. And the said GEORGE CARDER on his
part, doth hereby covenant promise and agree to teach and instruct the
said apprentice or cause him to be taught and instructed to read, write,
and cypher as far as the Rule of Three, if the said apprentice be
capable of learning, and also to teach and instruct the said apprentice
in the art, trade an mistery of Boot and Shoe making in the best way and
manner he can and well and faithfully to find and provide for the said
apprentice good and sufficient clothing and lodging and other
necessaries fit and convenient for such an apprentice during the term
aforesaid and at the expiration thereof shall give unto the said
apprentice one good suit of clothes worth six dollars per year. Also
one set of tools, and five dollars in money. In testimony whereof the
said parties have hereunto set their hand and seals this Twenty fifth
day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and
thirty four.
