Hi, fellow list members!
I am looking for information on the following surnames: HARNETT,
BEDWELL, and SOUTH. Eliza Jane Harnett married John (Jehu) Bedwell on
June 30, 1836 in Tippecanoe Co. Her sister, Delilah, married William
Wayland South on June 26, 1836, also in Tippecanoe Co. I believe Elijah
HARNETT was the father of Eliza Jane and Delilah. John BEDWELL was the
son of James Bedwell and Rachel Stanley. William Wayland SOUTH was the
son of David South and Naomi White. Eliza and John Bedwell moved to
Louisa Co., IA early in their marriage along with his parents, James and
Rachel Bedwell. Delilah and William South remained in Indiana for the
births of their children and then relocated to the Warren/Knox County
area of Illinois as did his parents, David and Naomi South. Elijah
Harnett operated a mill in Shelby Twp. through the 1830s. In 1839 he
and John McFARLAND plead guilty to charges of affray and assault and
battery for "coming together in a public place in a war-like manner" and
were fined $2.50 each by the State of Indiana! I'd sure like to know
what that was about!
There must have been a group who migrated from Clark Co., OH about
1830. Elijah Harnett was there for the 1830 census, and a book on the
Tippecanoe Co. states he was in Tippecanoe Co. in 1830. Anyone know
about others who moved to Tippecanoe Co. from Clark Co., OH about the
same time?
I'd love to hear from anyone who has any information about these
families!
