An excerpt from the January 1, 1846, edition of the Journal and Free
Press:
WHIG COUNTY CONVENTION
"...the Whigs of Tippecanoe county met in council at Lafayette, on the
first of January, 1846, for the purpose of appointing Delegates to the
State Convention, to be held in Indianapolis, on the 9th instant...On
mothion of J.B. SEAMANS, JOHN W. ODELL, Esq. was called to the Chair and
SAMUEL HOOVER, Esq. appointed Secretary.
On motion of MR. GREGORY, a Committe of five were appointed by the
Chairman to report Resolutions to the Convention, to wit: BAKER GUEST,
J.B. SEAMANS, W.P. REYNOLDS, WM. HAWKINS, and R.C. GREGORY.
On motion of Doct. A. TAYLOR, a Committe was appointed to report a list
of Delegates to the State Convention, which committee consisted of the
following persons: JOHN S. FORGEY of Tippecanoe township; GEORGE YOUNT
of Randolph township; PHILIP McCORMICK of Wabash; WM. VIRGIN of Perry
township; TIMOTHY DAME of Fairfield, and J.A. GLADDEN of Lauramie.
The Committe to name Delegates to the State Convention made the
following Report which was approved by the Convention:

Wabash Township: PHILIP McCORMICK, DOCT. ANDREW TAYLOR, SAMUEL GRAY, and
LEVI JENNINGS.
Tippecanoe Township: JOHN S. FORGEY, JOHN ROBERTS, WM. M. STRETCH, and
WILLIMA SIMS, Jr.
Shelby Township: JAMES REED, ELNATHAN CORY, and SAMUEL SHIGLEY
Wayne Township: SOLOMON SLAYBACK, THOMAS HOOVER, ROBERT KENWORTHY, and
JOHN H. SMITH
Randolph Township: BAKER GUEST, CHARLES STATON, GEORGE YOUNT, and MR.
HEAD
Jackson Township: JOHN W. ODELL, ISAAC SHELBY, SAMUEL RANKIN, and JAMES
V. DUTTON
Lauramie Township: JACKSON COCHRAN, JEREMIAH C. GANO, C.C. CORKINS, and

Sheffield Township: DAVID CROUSE, SAMUEL FAVORITE, SAMUEL WILGITS, and

Perry Township: JETHRO WADE, JOHN ROBINSON, WILLIAM VIRGIN, and DAVID

Washington Township: JESSE L. WATSON, JOHN DEHNER, THOMAS WATSON, Jr.,
BENJAMIN L. TEA.
On motion, said delegates have power to fill all vacancies that may be
necessary.
On motion, a Central Committe of ten for Tippecanoe County, was
appointed by the Chair, to wit: O.L CLARK, Chairman; BAKER GUEST, PHILIP
McCORMICK, PHILIP FORESMAN, WM. F. REYNOLDS, SAMUEL HOOVER, R.C.
GREGORY, SAMUEL A. HUFF, ISRAEL SPENCER and JOHN ROBERTS."
