Soldiers Home is still very much in operation. However, it is rarely
referred to as that anymore (except by us locals), rather it is now
referred to as Indiana Veteran's Home. As a matter of fact, I live less
than a mile from there. It is a very nice place, situated on a hill
overlooking State Rd. 43 (aka North River Road) and a small picnic-type
park. It is more or less a wooded area, with lots of big old trees.
There are a few residence halls and a small hospital. And not too long
ago, someone took the Commandant's Home and restored it and made it into
a Bed and Breakfast. The cemetery is located behind the complex and can
be seen from Soldiers Home Road. It is a large cemetery.
They do have a library up there and have some records, including, I
believe, some death records. There is one number listed in the phone
book and it is 765-463-1502. Someone else wrote to me regarding the
Veteran's Home a few months ago, and said they ended up getting
information from the State Archives. I know the archives have
applications for residency, so perhaps you could write for that and it
might be of some help to you.
