It has been a while since I posted my family information, so I thought I'd
post it again and see if any of this sounds familiar to any of you.
I am looking for information on Elijah (Elisha) BEMISS, his wife (probably
named Sarah) and their children. Elijah was born in Connecticut about 1798.
He and his family were in Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Ohio at the time of the
1820 and 1830 census. Sometime after 1830 the family moved to Lafayette,
Tippecanoe Co, Indiana. Elijah and his wife had 11 children. Elijah
remained in Lafayette until 1885. He died while visiting his daughter in
Ill. in October of 1885. It is believed that his wife predeceased him, and
is probably buried somewhere in the Lafayette area.
Elijah's oldest child was Hanna Elizabeth BEMISS born about 1825 in
Cincinnati, Ohio (my great grandmother). Hanna married Dr. John A. HALL in
1848 in Tippecanoe Co., Indiana. I would also like to know the names of
John A. HALL's parents and siblings. John and Hanna had 4 children: Charles
H. H. HALL, Elmon T. HALL, Harry A. HALL, and Mary Elizabeth HALL. Hannah
and her husband moved to Warren County, Ind by 1850, however the obituaries
for the three boys all state that they were born in Lafayette so Hanna may
have been staying with her parents at the time the boys were born. The
youngest daughter was born in Pine Village, Warren Co. Ind, in 1861. The
family moved to Danville, Illinois about 1865.
Elijah's youngest child was Martha Anne BEMISS born about 1844, probably in
Lafayette. Martha married Fred H. WORTMAN in Tippecanoe County, Indiana in
1865, and moved with her new husband to Danville, Ill. right after the
wedding. It is assumed that Martha and her husband probably traveled with
John and Hanna listed above when they moved to Danville. Martha's Husband
was born in Prussia, Germany in Sept. 1833 and came to this country in 1843,
living first in Cincinnati, Ohio, and later in Lafayette where he met and
married Martha. They had three children all born in Danville, Ill.
Elijah had 9 other children, but their names as yet are unknown.
I would sincerely appreciate any information or help finding out information
on these families. I live in Oregon, so research materials are limited for
Indiana. I sure would love to find some long lost cousins out there!
Thanks,
Maggie Hall
