Mrs. Melissa E. SMITH, wife of William W. SMITH, wife of William W. SMITH,
vice-president of the Merchant's National bank, died at 2 o'clock yesterday
afternoon at her home, corner of Ferry Street and Perrin Avenue, of heart
failure. She had not been in the best of health in recent years, but was not
confined to her bed until Thursday morning.She failed rapidly and the end
came quietyly. Melissa E. JOHNSTON was born January 11, 1841 in Carlisle, O.
She was married to William W. SMITH, June 1, 1859 and had been a resident of
this city for 46 years. She was a member of Triity M.E. church and for many
years was active in all branches of church work. Mrs. SMITH was a true
Christian woman and was revered by all who knew her. She is survived by her
husband and four children, Mrs. Carrie WALLACE, of West Lafayette, Deloss W.
SMITH of this city, Marcellus L. SMITH and Werdie P. SMITH, both of Oakland,
Cal. The funeral will be conducted from the home at 2 o'clock Tuesday
afternoon. Rev. E.W. DUNLAVY officiating. The services will be public, but
the burial at Springvale cemetery will be private.
