I'll jump in!
Surnames in Tippecanoe Co.:
HARNETT, Elijah and Susanna (Strause) - came to Tippecanoe Co. from
Clark Co., OH in 1830, settled on Indian Creek in Shelby Twp where he
started a grist mill. Their daughters, Delilah and Eliza Jane, married
in Tippecanoe Co. - Delilah to William Wayland SOUTH on June 26, 1836
and Eliza Jane to John/Jehu BEDWELL on June 30, 1836. Other daughters
were Mary who married Samuel LEWIS in Clark Co., OH in 1826 and
Elizabeth who married Samuel OBENCHAIN in Clark Co., OH in 1828. Mary,
Delilah and Elizabeth and families are in Jasper Co., IN for the 1850
census. Eliza and John Bedwell relocated to Louisa Co., IA where John
died in 1845.
Elijah HARNETT and John McFARLAND were charged with affray and assault
and battery for "coming together in a public place in a war-like
manner" with the intent of causing bodily harm to each other on Jan 1,
1838 and pled guilty to the charges in Feb 1839 - fine was $2.50! If
anyone has access to old newspapers and could find out the story on
this, I would dearly love to hear it!
Elijah sold the grist mill to Lemuel WIGGINS in 1840 or 1841, and I
believe he died in Jasper Co., IN in 1845. This will be hard to prove
for the records of Jasper Co. burned in a courthouse fire.
Anyone with info on any of these names?
