Dear JR,
Are you looking for Louis Kimmel? During my search for the German
community in Lafayette, Robert Kriebel was kind enough to give a list of
several articles he had published on Germans. He Kriebel published an
article Louis Kimmel on June 22, 1984, in his Old Lafaytte column in the
Journal and Courier. This information is taken from that column.
Louis Kimmel was a businessman, journalist, soldier, magistrate, and mayor
of Lafayette. He was born in the spring of 1828 in Roedgen, Germany. After
the unrest in Germany that grew out of the failed revolution of 1848,
Kimmel, his wife, children, and his mother (his father had died) left,
arriving in Lafayette Aug. 8, 1854. Everyone in the family except Kimmel
and one son died in the cholera epidemic of that year. Kimmel went on to
lead a full life. He remarried, became president of the local chapter of
the German Turner Society, and helped launch a German-language newspaper
called _Beobachter am Wabash_ (Observer on the Wabash). When the Civil War
broke out, Kimmel joined the 32nd Indiana Volunteer Infantry, an all-German
unit. After the war he worked for the railroad and went into politics. In
1871 he was elected mayor. He was reelected twice, one in 1877 and once in
1879. He received several federal appointments, had a street in Lafayette
named after him, and was active in several local lodges. He died October
24, 1910, at the age of 82.
