Linwood was a town that was incorporated into Lafayette. The area still
exists, but I doubt that a Yahoo map would respond to Linwood. It should
recognize the street names. The way you have the addresses listed is a
little confusing, however. If I remember right, the small letters "s" and
"n" in these directories usually mean "on the south/north side."
Street
names have changed a bit since 1887-88. I'd just try several variations:
3 S. Third
15 Third
15 N. Hartford
3 N. Hartford,
etc.
I believe Linwood is north of Greenbush cemetery, in the vicinity of State
Road 25 as it makes its way into Lafayette from Sagamore Parkway. There is
a Linwood school, and there are some other designations, a small shopping
area, etc. When you get over there you can sort of tell this was once a
town.
Could they have had two houses, one in town (especially since he was an
attorney) and another on their farm? I think this was done sometimes.
1887-1888. This is most interesting, because for the year that
Cordelia Mote
is living 3 miles outside of town, William's address was listed as an
Attorney; MOTE & BALL 3s. 3rd. with a residence at 15th 3rd. n Hartford
Linwood.
In the Lafayette City Section 1873-74 William an Attorney; William D. MOTE of
MOTE & VAN CAMP he is living at Battle Camp.
Do these areas still exists and would I be able to find them on yahoo map?
