Collin, Gordon and others,
I know of at least 3 cemeteries in or around Battle Ground. I just got
back from visiting the Battlefield with my 4 year old grandson (can't
start them too young now can we??), and I took a quick walk-through of
the Harrisonville cemetery, which is located right next to the chapel on
the Battlefield Park grounds. Most of the stones were pretty old, ca.
1840's and 50's, and difficult to read. Some of the names I jotted down
real quick were: Morgan, Archibald, Barnhard, Burget, Shearer, McClean,
McCormick, Hamilton, Wright. There were lots of others, but I just
didn't have the time to check them all. I'd say there are about 45-60
graves in this cemetery. There are two located within the fenced area
around the chapel, and I think the names were Snider, but won't swear to
it.
Gordon, for you I noticed there were quite a few Pattison's: William d.
1846, Judah d. 1845, James d. 1870 at age 87, and Oren H. d. 1835?
There were others, but some of the stones were hard to read. Most of
these men were in their 40's and 50's.
The other cemeteries in the Battle Ground area are Pretty Prairie on
Tyler road and Battle Ground cemetery on Pretty Prairie road. Both
pretty good size cemeteries and still in use today.
These cemeteries have been read by TIPCOA and they are in a card file at
their library. I believe they also have a listing of each cemetery in a
couple of binders in the librarian's office.
Hope this has been helpful to some of you. Now, time for lunch!
