NELSON G. STANTON, an active and enterprising business man of Shelby Township,
residing on section 14, was born in Carroll County, Indiana, June 28, 1848,
a son of HIRAM and REBECCA (JENKINS) STANTON, who were natives of Ohio,
the father born in Muskingum County. NELSON G. was reared to the vocation
of a farmer, and his education was received in the schools of his district.
At the age of twenty-five he commenced work at the blacksmiths trade,
which he has since followed most of the time, and is now doing quite an
extensive business in that line. Since October, 1881, he has been engaged
in mercantile pursuits as a traveling salesman, carrying a fine assortment
of goods, which he sells at reasonable prices, and has established a good
trade in this line of business. The farm where he made his home, on section
14, Shelby Township, contains 120 acres of valuable land, well improved,
and good residence and farm buildings. Mr. Stanton was married October
29, 1878, to MRS. CATHERINE MOORE, who was born at Jeffersonville, Fayette
County, Ohio, a daughter of JOHN and SARAH (JAYNES) FLORENCE, who were
natives of Ohio, her father born in Clarke County, and her mother in Fayette
County. In 1868 the FLORENCE family came to Shelby Township, this county.
JOHN FLORENCE is now a resident of Rensselaer, Indiana. MRS. STANTON was
first married to GEORGE W. MOORE, October 5, 1871, who left at his death
one son, ED. S., who was born February 16, 1875. Both MR. and MRS. STANTON
are members of the Methodist Episcopal church. In politics he affiliates
with the Republican party.
