THE LAST OF EARTH
Mrs. W. Z. Stuart
It is with profound sorrow that the Courier announces the death of one
who in life was honored and admired as a true and noble woman, and whose
memory will ever be revered and cherished by all who were fortunate in
possessing her acquaintance and friendship.
Mrs. W. Z. Stuart died shortly after 1 o'clock Monday morning, October
8, at the residence of her son T.A. Stuart, on Tinkler street, where she
had made her home for the past four years. Mrs. Stuart had been ill for
three weeks, and although her case was serious, it was not until within
the last few days that her condition was considered critical. At all
times during her suffering she exhibited the patience and Christian
fortitude which formed a chief characteristic. Her sweet, pure,
upright, noble character is reflected in the sons who are left to honor
her life, and her memory will be sincerely cherished beyond the circle
that bears her name.
Sara Scribner Benedict, wife of the late Judge William Z. Stuart, of
Logansport, Ind., was born at Verona, Oneida county, New York, September
7, 1824. She was married to the late Judge Stuart in June, 1849, and
lived in Logansport from that time until June, 1884, when she came to
live with her son, T.A. Stuart. She had four sons, Charles B., Thomas
A., Will V., and Will Z., all of whom survive, and with the exception of
the last named, reside in this city.
The funeral services were held Wednesday morning at the residence of her
son T. A. Stuart, on Tinkler street. The funeral oration was delivered
by Rev. W. P. Kane, of the Second Presbyterian church. A large number
of friends of the deceased and family were present, both from this city
and abroad, and chief among the latter were many old Logansport friends,
Judge Winfield and others. The floral offerings were the richest and
handsomest that could be procured and formed an elegant token of the
high esteem and reverence with which the deceased was held. After the
services at the house the remains were taken to the Wabash depot, where
a special care was in waiting to carry them, the relatives and friends
to Logansport, where the interment took place.
