JACOB B. SHIVELY, who resides on section 11, Perry Township, is a son of
JOHN SHIVELY, one of the earliest pioneers of Perry Township. JOHN SHIVELY
was born in Montgomery County, Ohio, December 17, 1805, a son of JACOB
SHIVELY, who was born, reared and married in the State of Pennsylvania.
The latter settled in Montgomery County, Ohio, in an early day, and many
years after his son JOHN came to this county he removed to Carroll County,
Indiana, where he and his wife spent the remainder of their days. He reared
a family of seven children, of whom three are yet living-JOHN, living in
Carroll County, near Camden; CHRISTIAN, a resident of Illinois, and ESTHER,
wife of HENRY METZGER, of Carroll County. A daughter, CATHERINE, married
DANIEL WAGONER, and died in Carroll County; JACOB died at his home near
Camden, and ELIZABETH, wife of DAVID WAGONER, died in Carroll County. JACOB
SHIVELY, the father of the above children, was the first to pass away,
his death being caused by a tree falling on him.
JOHN SHIVELY, the father of our subject, was reared in Montgomery County,
Ohio, to the vocation of a farmer, which he followed the greater part of
his life. He was married in Ohio to MISS ESTHER ULREY. In 1823 he started
for Tippecanoe County, Indiana, where he entered a tract of land on sections
11 and 12, Perry Township, on which he settled and there made a good farm.
His land, when he settled on it, was in a state of nature, heavily covered
with timber, but by preserving industry and good management he made a good
home out of the forest and brought his land under fine cultivation. He
was bereaved by the death of his wife in 1880, after a happy married life
of more than half a century. MR. SHIVELY was again married to MISS ELIZABETH
BOMER, of Carroll County, and after this marriage, in 1882, he removed
to Carroll County, and has since made his home near Camden. By his first
marriage he had six children who grew to maturity, three sons and three
daughters, and of these four are still living-MRS. ELIZABETH WAGONER, JACOB
B., HESTER, wife of JOSEPH FELIX, of Carroll County, and JOHN, of Detroit,
Michigan. DAVID died at the age of eighteen years, and SUSANNAH, who was
the wife of HENRY KUNTZ, died in Clinton County. JOHN SHIVELY, Sr., was
a typical pioneer and a representative citizen, and during his long residence
in this county he gained the confidence and respect of all who knew him.
He settled in the county when the now thriving city of Lafayette was but
a hamlet of two or three dwellings, and has seen the surrounding country
change from a wilderness into well cultivated farms and pleasant homes.
He has been a minister in the German Baptist church for a half century,
and although eighty-two years of age, he is still actively engaged in the
ministry. He organized the Pyrmont Baptist church, from which the Middle
Fork and the Fairview churches have since been formed.
His son, JACOB B. SHIVELY, whose name heads this sketch, is now the only
representative of his father living in Tippecanoe County, and he is the
owner of eighty acres of the land entered by his father when he settled
in the county. He was born on the old homestead where he now lives, in
a primitive log house, the date of his birth being September 8, 1836. Here
he was reared amid the scenes of pioneer life, and here he has always lived,
a period of fifty-one years. He was married October 29, 1857, to MISS ANN
ELIZA MOHLER, who was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, August 12, 1839,
a daughter of SAMUEL and MARY (ZIMMERMAN) MOHLER, who settled in Wabash
County, Indiana, in an early day. Her father died in Wabash County. Her
mother is still living. MR. and MRS. SHIVELY are the parents of two sons-LEVI
EDWIN, born March 10, 1861, resides on part of the old homestead, and JOHN
OWEN, who was born March 20, 1870. MR. SHIVELY is now the owner of a fine
farm of 164 acres of land, which is well improved and under a high state
of cultivation. In his political views he is a Republican, and is a strong
adherent of the principles of that party. His first Presidential vote was
cast for Abraham Lincoln. Both he and his wife are worthy and consistent
members of the German Baptist church.
