and one with postage stamp. One postmark is barely visible the other is
shown here. April 15th AD 1864 From your cincere lover and husband until
death, James W. Cole to his loving wife, Mollie J. Cole. Stockwell,
Tippecanoe County, Indiana Some exerpts: We can here the canons they comenst
fighting old buckner last night. My dear I would give anything almost if you
could see the battlefield. Let me tell you it is a site. The trees are just
cut all to pieces with canons. Our lines of batle was 14 miles long there is
more men here than I ever seen before at one time. Be careful about what I
told you in my other letters. Keep this to yourself if you please. Well
james, you can't get her till I write and send you a bass you can't git
throug the bridges with out a pass they won't let citizens thru. 40th
regiment, 2nd vol in care of capt kirkpatrick, Kentucky. Well my dear the
Rebels made a charge on our pickets Out at Ringole and shot a great many of
them before they would take them and after they captured them the rebs shot
10 more of our men. The next thing will be about a big wedding that went off
here in our camp. There was a man and woman came here to get our chaplain to
marry them and they got married and went home all right and the woman heard
that he had a wife and children and she proved it and he did not get to
sleep with her at all. Camp one mile from Louisville leave for bardstown.
c/o 40th Regiment Ind Vol in care of Capt. Kirkpatrick, Ky from John K. Cole
to James W. Cole There is some talk of us going to cleveland. Our brigade is
scattered along the railroad between Charleston and Louden. My dear I would
give anything to have your miniature now. Reference to Look Out Mountain. We
are getting right into the heart of Ga and they hate to give it up but
cannot help. We are about 60 miles from Atlanta and there is where they will
fight there ever lasting struggle. The prisoner they are going to make an
other stand at Marrietta but I think we can move them from there with a 2 or
3 day fight. I think that Atlanta will be ours against the 4th of July if
Grant is doing as well as we hear he is we will clean out this army and have
about 150,000 men here and there is 10,000 more coming up. We were on the
battlefield 11 days and did not get hardly any sleep at all. The rebs left
Sat night and Sherman marched after him and he had to stay here to get
rations. My dear I suppose we will move jout in the morning again and go in
pursuit of Johnson. To his duck, yours until death.
As of this message they are going for 207.50 with seven bids. Auction ends
in 7 days. Can't imagine what the final price will be for these!
