ANTHONY KIRKHOFF, deceased, was a native of Germany, born at Mauritz, Westphalia,
January 28, 1840, a son of HENRY BARNEY and MARY (LUFFE) KIRKHOFF. He was
reared in his native place at his father's farm and dairy, and there received
his education. In the fall of 1857, when seventeen years of age, he immigrated
with his mother to America, coming directly to Lafayette, Indiana, where
two of his brothers and a sister were living. The father intended to follow
them to this country the following spring, but in the meantime he died.
They located in Fairfield Township, Tippecanoe County, where the mother
of our subject died about 1867. Anthony's first employment after coming
to this country was in the dairy of his brother, JOHN KIRKHOFF, for whom
he worked until starting in business for himself. He bought out BARNEY
KIRKHOFF, but they soon traded back, and ANTHONY formed a partnership with
JOHN KRABBE, with whom he was associated three years when this partnership
was dissolved, MR. KIRKHOFF continuing in business alone.
His first land purchase was a tract of forty acres, to which he added from
time to time until he had 120 acres of valuable land, situated near the
city of Lafayette, and well improved. He subsequently bought sixty acres
of land, on which was a large brick house, and also two small houses, a
brick and a frame. He was a man of fine business ability, and established
an extensive business, and was one of the substantial men of his township.
October 28, 1867, he was married to MISS ELIZABETH ZINK, a native of Baden
Baden, Germany, born at Sasbach-Amt-Achern, February 22, 1844, a daughter
of JOHN BAPTIST and MAGDALENA (DEER) ZINK. In 1866 her father brought his
family to America, and the same year settled in Fairfield Township, where
the parents yet reside, MR. ZINK aged seventy-three years, and his wife
aged sixty-eight years. Seven children were born to MR. and MRS. KIRKHOFF,
as follows--LIZZIE, MARY, LENA, ANTHONY, ALBERT, GEORGIA and LOUISA. MR.
KIRKHOFF died November 13, 1887, leaving his family and a wide circle of
friends to mourn the loss of an affectionate husband and father and a good
citizen. He was an active member of St. Boniface German Catholic Church,
and was universally respected by the citizens of Lafayette. He was one
of the the leading and most influential members of the St. Joseph Benevolent
Society, and took an active part in the affairs of St. Boniface Benevolent
Society at Indianapolis. Though a popular man he was not an office seeker.
In his political views he was a Democrat.
