SIMEON SNYDER, one of the well known citizens of Tippecanoe County, where
he has been a resident since 1858, is a native of Ohio, born in Greene
County, March 4, 1829, a son of JONATHAN SNYDER, who was born in Washington
County, Maryland. His mother's maiden name was MILLER. She died when our
subject was but four years old. His father survived until 1858. MR. and
MRS. JONATHAN SNYDER were the parents of eleven children, of whom only
five are now living: MRS. MARY BAUFMAN, MRS. MARGARET HYLAND, JOHN, HENRY
and SIMEON.
SIMEON began working at the wheelwright's trade when eighteen years old,
which he followed for many years. He was married November 16, 1853, to
MISS SALLY J. DAUGHERTY, a native of Greene County, Ohio, and a daughter
of MICHAEL DAUGHERTY, who was one of the prominent men of that county.
MR. and MRS. SNYDER are the parents of three children: WILLIAM E.D., of
Lafayette, was born December 30, 1856; FRANK M., born in September, 1861,
and DELLA MAY, March 31, 1867, and died December 5, 1887.
MR. SNYDER settled on his present farm in Perry Township, in 1858, his
land at that time being in a state of nature. In October, 1864, he enlisted
in Company D, Fortieth Indiana Infantry, and during his term of service
participated in the battles of Spring Hill, Franklin and Nashville. He
was honorably discharged at the close of the war, at which time his regiment
was stationed in Texas. Politically MR. SNYDER is a Republican, and is
a strong adherent to the principles of that party. He is a member of JOHN
A. LOGAN POST, G.A.R., of Lafayette. Both he and his wife are members of
the Methodist Protestant church.
MICHAEL DAUGHERTY, the father of MRS. SNYDER, although never a resident
of Tippecanoe County, came here in an early day, and entered a tract of
land in Perry Township, which was occupied a number of years by MICHAEL
DAUGHERTY, Jr. The latter was married here to MISS MELISSA CLOSPEL, a daughter
of AARON CLOSPEL, one of the early settlers of Tippecanoe County. He finally
returned to Greene County, Ohio, where he died in 1882. MICHAEL DAUGHERTY,
Sr., died a week after the death of his son.
MICHAEL DAUGHERTY, Sr., was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1801,
and settle on his farm in Spring Valley, Greene County, Ohio, in 1829,
where he lived until his death. The Xenia Torchlight said of him in a notice
of his decease: "The great energy and force of character which MR. DAUGHERTY
displayed in business and in fulfilling positions of trust are indeed models,
and have left their impression on the community of which his children may
well feel proud. He liberally aided all worthy public enterprises. Many
who were once in need of charity can testify to his great liberality."
He was the father of ten children, of whom seven are yet living: FRANKLIN,
a wealthy and respected citizen of Peru, Indiana; JAMES H. (deceased, formerly
of Xenia, Ohio; JOHN F., THOMAS J., MRS. SARAH SNYDER; ELIZABETH, of Harveysburg,
Ohio, and MRS. LUCINDA STUMP. All his children have become honored and
respected members of society.
