JOHN BLICKENSTAFF, engaged in farming on section 5, Lauramie Township,
Tippecanoe County, is a native of this county, born in Sheffield Township,
June 18, 1838. His father, JOSEPH BLICKENSTAFF, who is now deceased, was
born in Miami County, Ohio, May 2, 1805. He was one of the old and respected
pioneers of this county, settling in Sheffield Township, in 1830, when
Indians and wild animals were the principal inhabitants of the surrounding
country. He was united in marriage to KEZIAH JONES, who is still living,
who was married April 5, 1811(?), and they were the parents of eleven children,
of whom our subject was the sixth child. Five of the children are living
at the present time, named-ENOS, CATHERINE, MARY, JOHN, our subject, and
ELLEN.
JOHN BLICKENSTAFF was reared to agricultural pursuits, and educated in
the primitive log cabin subscription schools of his day. He has always
followed farming with the exception of about three years, when he lived
in Wisconsin, engaged in the mercantile business and was also postmaster,
and is now the owner of two fine farms, his home farm containing ninety-seven
acres of choice land, and a farm in Sheffield Township containing 156 acres.
He enlisted in the war of Rebellion but was at first rejected, but afterward
served six months, doing volunteer service in hospital, receiving no pay.
Three of his brothers, JACOB, JOSEPH and ENOS, were also in the war, JACOB
and JOSEPH dying in the service. ENOS is now living in Frankfort, Indiana.
MR. BLICKENSTAFF was married September 5, 1858, to HANNAH PETERS, a daughter
of JOHN PETERS, who was one of the early settlers of Wildcat Prairie in
Sheffield Township. Of the seven children born to this union five are living:
ORA, living in Comanche County, Kansas; MARY, JOHN, OSCAR and HARRY. In
politics MR. BLICKENSTAFF is a Republican. He is a member of the Odd Fellows
order. Both he and his wife are members of the Christian church.
