JESSE DAUGHERTY to GEORGE W. MATTHEWS
This Indenture made the 1st day of July eighteen hundred and thirty
four, between JOHN McCORMICK and IRA SMITH "Overseers of the Poor" of
Fairfield Township in Tippecanoe County and State of Indiana of the one
part, and GEORGE W. MATTHEWS of said county of the second part,
Witnesseth that the said Overseers of the Poor hat put and placed, and
by these presents doth put and bind out one JESSE DAUGHERTY a poor boy,
aged five years the tenth day of January eighteen hundred and thirty
four, to the said GEORGE W. MATTHEWS, as an apprentice to learn the art
and occupation of Husbandry and farming which the said MATTHEWS now
pursues. The said JESSE DAUGHERTY to dwell with and serve the said
GEORGE after the manner of an apprentice until he shall arrive at the
full age of twenty one years, during all which time said apprentice
shall well and faithfully serve the said GEORGE: keep his secrets and
everywhere at all times readily obey his lawful commands: he shall do no
damage to the said George nor willfully suffer any to be done by others,
which it is in his power to prevent, nor shall at any time absent
himself from the service of said GEORGE without his consent, but shall
in all things behave himself as a good and faithful apprentice during
his whole term aforesaid. And the said GEORGE on his part doth covenant
and agree to and with the said Overseers of the Poor and their
successors in office, that he will teach and instruct the said JESSE or
cause him to be taught and instructed in the art and occupation of
husbandry and all things pertaining to farming in the best manner he
can, and that he will give him one years schooling in some good English
school, six months of which shall be in his nineteenth year: And also
that he will find and provide for him good and sufficient meat, drink,
lodging and apparel during said Term. And shall at the expiration of
said term give said JESSE one horse saddle and bridle of the value of
fifty six dollars and one suit of clothes, besides his daily wearing
apparel of the value of forty five dollars. In testimony whereof the
said parties hereunto set their hands and seals the day and year first
above written.
