ELIAS ALFRED to DAVID JENNERS--
Indenture of a poor boy, by the overseers of the poor.
This indenture made this the eleventh day of August 1834. Between JOHN
STAR and JOHN FISHER overseers of the poor of Washington Township in the
County of Tippecanoe and State of Indiana of the one part and DAVID
JENNERS of County aforesaid of the other part witnesseth that the said
overseers bore put placed and bound and do by these presents put place
and bind ELIAS ALFRED a poor Boy aged 15 years 4 months and 23 days as
an apprentice to the said DAVID JENNERS as to be taught the art trade
and occupation of a blacksmith which he the said D. JENNERS now uses?
and to live with and serve him the said DAVID JENNERS as an apprentice
for the term of five years eleven months and nineteen days that is to
say until he the said ELIAS ALFRED shall arrive at the age of
twenty-one years, if the said DAVID JENNERS shall so long live and the
said Overseers do by these presents give unto the said JENNERS all the
right power and authority over the said ELIAS ALFRED and his service
during the said term which by the laws of this state a master has in and
over a lawfully indentured apprentice and the said DAVID JENNERS in
consideration than off doth on his part covenant promise and agree to
and with the said Overseers and their successors in office and each and
every of them and with the said ELIAS ALFRED that he will teach and
instruct the said E. ALFRED as his apprentice or cause him to be well
and sufficiently taught and instructed in the art trade and occupation
according to the capacity and ability of the said ELIAS ALFRED of a
blacksmith after the best way and manner he can. Also to give the said
apprentice four months schooling all at one time at any time the said
JENNERS may chose during the said apprentices time and to train him to
habits of industry and morality and during the term of his
apprenticeship to provide and allow to him sufficient meat drink washing
lodging and clothing and all other things necessary for an apprentice
during the said term of apprenticeship and the said JENNERS further
agrees to give the said E. ALFRED if he stays his time out a good
freedom suit in witness whereof the said parties have hereunto set their
hands and seals this the day and year above written.
