PETER SCHNEPP, one of the well known and highly respected citizens of Washington
Township, is a native of Ohio, born in Montgomery County, July 24, 1823,
a son of JOHN PHILIP and MARGARET ELIZABETH (EMERICK) SCHNEPP, both of
whom were natives of Pennsylvania, the former born in Schuylkill County.
In 1803 or 1804 they removed to Montgomery County, Ohio, where they lived
many years. The father died in 1857, the mother surviving her husband until
1859. Four of the children are yet living, as follows--JOHN, in Jones County,
Iowa; PETER, in Tippecanoe County; MRS. MARY ANN BENDER, in Fountain County,
Indiana; and MRS. CATHERINE BENDER, in Montgomery County, Ohio.
PETER, the subject of this sketch, was was reared to agricultural pursuits,
and in his boyhood received such educational advantages as the early pioneer
schools of Ohio afforded. He was married in 1854 to MISS REBECCA BOLENDER,
who was born in Montgomery County, Ohio, December 25, 1838, a daughter
of DAVID and JULIA ANN (WALLBURN) BOLENDER. Two children were born to MR.
and MRS. SCHNEPP, both now deceased--WILLIAM HENRY died at the age of five
months, and MARGARET ELIZABETH, wife of LEWIS N. JESTER, who left at her
death two children--SERENO, aged eleven years, and EANRO, aged six years.
MR. SCHNEPP followed farming in Montgomery County, Ohio, until 1861, when
he came to Tippecanoe County, Indiana, and bought 160 acres of land on
section 14, Washington Township, which he improved and resided until 1877.
He then bought seventy-eight acres of land on which he has since made his
home, which he has finely improved and brought under a high state of cultivation.
His homestead farm is beautifully situated, adjoining the village of Colburn,
and everything about the place indicated the care and thrift of the owner.
He has a fine brick residence where he resides, and substantial farm buildings.
Besides the farm he still owns the 160 acre farm he first purchased in
Washington Township, and also a well improved farm of 160 acres in Deer
Creek Township, Carroll County.
In politics MR. SCHNEPP is a strong adherent of the principles of the Democratic
party. He and his wife are worthy and active members of the Lutheran church;
in which he has been an elder for many years, and is a zealous worker for
the cause of his Master. He is a man of genial disposition, cordial in
his manners, fair and honorable in all his dealings, and is numbered among
the leading citizens of Washington Township.
