JOHN McKILLIP has been a resident of Tippecanoe County since 1828, being
about a year old when his parents, DANIEL and NANCY (LAWSON) McKILLIP,
settled in Tippecanoe Township on section 28. The father lived on the land
on which he first settled after coming to the county until his death, which
occurred in 1832. He left at his death a widow and five children, MRS.
McKILLIP surviving her husband's death for many years. She died in August,
1880, at the advanced age of eighty-four years. Of their children, JAMES
is now a resident of White County; WILLIAM died aged twenty-two years;
JOHN is the subject of this sketch; MRS. CAROLINE WALKER is deceased, and
JACKSON lives in White County. DANIEL McKILLIP was in politics a Democrat.
He was a consistent member of the New Light church.
JOHN McKILLIP, whose name heads this sketch, was born in Fayette County,
Ohio, January 20, 1827. He was reared in this county to the vocation of
a farmer, receiving such education as the pioneer schools of the county
afforded. He was married April 13, 1854, to MISS NANCY ROGERS, who was
born September 13, 1834, in Hampshire County, Virginia, a daughter of NATHANIEL
and RACHEL (CAIN) ROGERS. The family of MR. ROGERS settled in White County,
Indiana, in 1836, where MRS. ROGERS died in 1842. MR. ROGERS died in the
same county in 1883. Of their family six are living--LUKE, NANCY, MARGARET,
JAMES, JOSEPH and WARDEN.
JOHN McKILLIP has resided on his present farm in Tippecanoe Township since
1863. MR. and MRS. McKILLIP are worthy and consistent members of the United
Brethren church. Their only son, NATHAN D., was born April 5, 1855. He
received a good education in his youth, and subsequently engaged in teaching
school for several years. He now holds the position of mail clerk between
Lafayette, Indiana, and Bloomington, Illinois.
