Mrs. Sarah Jane (Shaffer) Byers, 86, widow of Parker A. Byers, 416 North Seventh Street,
died Wednesday night at 11:40 o'clock at St. Elizabeth hospital, where she was taken
Tuesday.
A lifelong resident of Lafayette, she was born Jan. 22, 1854, a daughter of Jacob and
Betsy Shaffer. She married Mr. Byers April 30, 1874, and he died Jan. 10, 1915. She was
a member of St. John's Episcopal church. Surviving are three nephews: George E.
Shaffer, Rome City; Robert M. Shaffer, Milwaukee, Wis., and Floyd A. Shaffer, Lafayette.
Her husband was formerly a well known and highly esteemed business man of the community.
He was nationally famous as a billiard artist and was a close friend of Jake Shaffer, the
elder, and other celebrities in that field of skill. Mr. Byers for many years operated
what was considered the best billiard parlor in the middle west, on the site of the
present Fowler hotel.
Frieds may call at the residence after 1 p.m. Friday. Services will be held Saturday
afternoon at 2 o'clock from the residence; Rev. R.F.Williams, D.D., officiating.
Burial in Greenbush cemetery.
