Hi, Deb,
I have corresponded with someone about the Starkeys before. Also, when I google the name
Ruelma Row, several hits come up, including a picture of Ruelma Row and another of Daniel
and Harriet (Starkey) Cole, both on the intippecanoe Rootsweb site. I will check my files
when I get home. I strongly suggest that is sawyer, not lawyer. The elaborate S in old
handwriting looks like an L. It startled me when I first saw it transcribed as lawyer on
an old census, and when I looked at the original, it seemed to me to be an S. Second, the
Richardville Reserve at Wyandott was not a reservation in the sense of the reservations in
the west. There, tribes were confined to a specific area. In Indiana, Chief
Richardville's children were given several sections of land surrounding an old village
site to reward or induce their father, a Miami chief who eventually was the Principal
Miami chief, to sign the treaty. It was also reasoned that if the Indians became land
owners they would "learn" to!
accept the white man's concept of land ownership. From the Indians' point of
view, it secured land for the village to live on. But this land was sold, with the
permission of the government, as soon as white settlement began in the area. Still, the
village remained for some time, with a trading post at the center. Some Indians did live
there, probably Pottawattomi or part Pottawattomi. But they were free to come and go as
they pleased.
