Most of the Indians there were metis, or mixed blood. They didn't have to leave when
their tribe was relocated. But we think most of them did. They probably left when the
Miami were moved. But I am not sure of the date of that at the moment. I would have to
look it up. I think it was about 1840. We think white settlement began in Sheffield
township at the "former" Wyandott village because there was a trading post
there. Some of the early residents had a history of settling near a trading post because
they could purchase supplies from the post or from the nearby Indian families. They had
done it in Fayette county at Connorsville and in the Strawtown area.
