DEATH OF AGED WOMAN.
Mrs. Elizabeth Shaffer Passes Away at Age of 88.
Death claimed today at 4 a.m. Mrs. Ellizabeth Shaffer, the widow of Jacob Shaffer, one of
Lafayette's pioneer settlers and business men of the early forties. She was a woman
of exemplary character and endeared to a large circle of friends. The deceased was
stricken with paralysis seven weeks ago and while her suffering was intense at times, it
was borne with Christian fortitude and patience. Mrs. Ellizabeth Shaffer was born in
Cleveland, OH July 2, 1824, and came to this state in company with her husband, Jacob
Shaffer, in the spring of 1847 and had been a permanent resident here since that time.
Her husband died in October, 1855. In Mrs. Shaffer's passing Lafayette loses one of
its oldest and most highly respected women. She was of French extraction and a lady of
the old school, admired for her womanly graces and benevolence. She is survived by two
daughters, Mrs. H.S. Kilgore, of Marion, and Mrs. Parker A. Byers, of this city, with whom
she resided, and four granchi!
ldren, Fred E. Geiger, of Chicago; George Shaffer, of Fort Wayne, Robert Shaffer, of
Milwaukee, and Florence and Floyd Shaffer, of this city, and two great-grandchildren, Ruth
and Gerald Shaffer, of Fort Wayne. The funeral will be conducted from the residence, 416
South Seventh street, Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The funeral will be public, but
the burial private. Friends will please omit flowers.
