Dear fellow genealogist,
I'm writing today to ask for help with your digital cameras. I have finally got 99%
of the file up on
Findagrave for Greenbush. Now the challenge is to get all those tombstones up to match
the names. In doing this, we can correct the bad dates in the file. Yes, sorry to say
they are not good. About 1/3 of the way through the cemetery I was able to see some of
the original record books. Many of the old Lafayette City section have recorded only the
burial dates. So each tombstone will help correct weather or not it's a burial or
death date.
I have been photographing here for 6 years and still don't have them all. Together we
can correct dates/spellings and also add more information by finding the tombstones.
This morning I have been adding some of the Williams stones. One of the tombstones has a
maiden name, two middle names and three birth years. The death years and section and lot
locations are in the file. I find those to be wonderful help. I have added my own hand
drawn map to the front page of Greenbush, it is buried under the "Click here to view
all images." under the last picture. I have also added a map to the front door at
the cemetery office when you visit.
As you can imagine, not everyone has a tombstone, so there are many folks that will only
have the burial dates listed. That is something you should ponder on any burial list.
So if you can add a digital photograph, and there are need corrections, PLEASE hit the
EDIT button an let me know.
Also, please don't be afraid to use a little water and nylon brush on the surface to
make the dates clear.
Another problem I have here is the spellings on the list. Oh my they are twisted.
Greenbush has many German families and the tombstones are written in old German too.
Help! There are a few pages in German in one burial book. I think there was a sexton
that was German at one time. Help! ;-)
I correct many as I continue to work things, but I just want you all to understand this is
not 100% good on this list. I have people wanting me to add the birth dates by what is
listed from this file, in the aged area. I'm not comfortable that the text is right.
If we have a tombstone showing this, or a record, then yes it would be better. I know
having these up online helps everyone find there people. I'm just trying to make it
clear, it's not all good yet.
This year I was planning to work through the Old Lafayette City section 4. There is no
real record for the four lower sections known as the Lafayette City cemetery. I have 2
books that have part of the burial listed, but no complete list exist today. I've been
told they burnt. So, washing the tombstone and then recording what is where can help
correct locations information.
I have also been given permission to restore and repair stones at Greenbush this year.
However, my darn neck bones are a mess and will not allow me to lift or dig. YET. ;-)

So folks, if you can help please let me know. Either online or the grounds. I will be
working the file over again online and trying to make it as good as possible. I do have
records to help now and I will be reviewing them this summer.
I will type up some history and post it soon. This is a fascinating cemetery that goes
back to the beginning of Lafayette. It is actually 2 cemeteries. Lafayette City and
Greenbush sections 1 through 7.
Having worked through a few cemeteries in Tippecanoe County, I can honestly tell you many
did not record death dates at all. That is a problem for family historians.
I am willing to work with anyone that wants help.
