Joan,
I have heard that death and birth certificates were not required by law
until the early 1900s.
You can try the state health dept. Sometimes deaths were reported to the
state, but not the county leve.
Your other option is a Lafayette newspaper search.

Subject: [INTIPPEC] No Death Record
Hi:
I am new to this list. My GGF, Joseph Zorn, died in Lafayette, IN just
before 13 Oct. 1897. This information was included in a newspaper death
notice from Hermann, Gasconade, MO where his funeral was held on above
date. I have written to the Tippecanoe Co. Health Dept. They have no
record of his death. Does anyone have any prior experience like this?
Is it possible someone could have died in Lafayette in that time frame,
no one reported the death, and the body was immediately transported to
Missouri? I am curious about this because I have no idea why he would
have been in Lafayette and had hoped to find some clue in the death
certificate - like who reported the death. If anyone out there has some
pertinent info or any ideas, would appreciate a contact. Jody Nestler
