Surname: McMillin, Heffner, Sayers, Thomas
-------------------------
AUGUSTUS B. McMILLIN, retired farmer, is a native of Virginia, born in
Tazewell County, near Tazewell Courthouse, September 10, 1827, a son of
ROBERT and NANCY (SAYERS) McMILLIN, both of whom were natives of Virginia.
In the fall of 1834, the family then consisting of the parents and two
children, AUGUSTUS B. and a younger sister, ELIZABETH, started for Tippecanoe
County, the mother riding on horseback with the youngest child in her arms,
Augustus also riding on horseback, while the father walked most of the
way. They arrived at their destination, locating at Wheelers Grove, where
the parents made their home until their death, the mother dying in the
year 1843, and the father in 1855. Three children named JOHN C., SUSAN
K., and SARAH were born to them after coming to this county, all of whom
are yet living. The surrounding country at the time of their settlement
was almost in a state of nature; Shawnee Indians were still numerous, and
wild game was still plentiful. Log cabins were the only habitations seen
in those early days.
AUGUSTUS B., the subject of this sketch, was reared amid the wild surroundings
of pioneer life, and has witnessed the many changes that have taken place
during the past fifty years. He has seen as many as fifty deer in a drove
in the early days of the county. His father being a farmer, he was reared
to the same occupation, which he has always followed, and in his agricultural
pursuits has been highly successful. He has given liberally to his children,
and still has 600 acres of choice land. He has always been a hard worker,
and had made many improvements for the county as well as for himself, and
his success in life has been due to his own persevering industry and good
management. He was united in marriage April 1, 1853, to MISS TABITHA THOMAS,
a daughter of JAMES THOMAS, of Montgomery. Of the nine children born to
this union eight are living NANCY J., wife of L.D. MAHAFFIE, now of Illinois;
JAMES T., ROBERT S., SAVANNAH, BOYDON A., STOW D., L.J. and CALVIN. SUSAN,
the fourth child is deceased. MRS. McMILLIN died May 2, 1885, and MR. McMILLIN
was again married in 1886, to MISS LAURA HEFFNER, and to them has been
born one son named ARTHUR. MR. McMILLIN now resides at Chauncey, where
he is surrounded with all the necessary comforts of life, and is now enjoying
the fruits of his years of toil. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity.
Both he and his wife are consistent members of the Methodist Episcopal
church.
