LUTHER LUCUS, an enterprising and progressive farmer of Sheffield Township,
is a native of Ross County, Ohio, born April 25, 1830, a son of MARTIN
and MARGARET (TURNER) LUCUS, who were among the old and respected pioneers
of Tippecanoe County. LUTHER was but two years old when brought to this
county, since which time his home has been in Tippecanoe County, a period
of fifty-five years. He was reared amid the scenes and incidents of pioneer
life, his youth being spent in assisting in the improvements and cultivation
of the home farm, and in attending the early schools of the county.
He has been four times married, first in 1853, to MISS SUSAN HARDWICK,
a daughter of GEORGE W. HARDWICK. She died about two years after her marriage,
leaving a daughter, ADELIA, who died in her eighteenth year. MR. LUCUS
was married a second time to ADELAIDE HARDWICK, a twin sister of his first
wife, she also dying about two years after her marriage. The only child
born to this union, a daughter named ELVA, became the wife of H.M. SHAFER,
and died in her twenty-second year. MR. LUCUS was again married to MISS
LUCY A. BURGIT, of Howard County, Indiana, who died ten years after their
marriage, leaving two children--OLIVER P.M. and LIZZIE F. The maiden name
of his present was EMMA S. WRIGHT, she being the daughter of CHARLES WRIGHT,
of Lauramie Township, and to them have been born one son, GARFIELD A.,
born November 6, 1880. MR. LUCUS is the owner of a fine farm where he resides,
containing 120 acres of choice land, well improved and highly cultivated,
a good residence and substantial farm buildings. Politically he is a Republican,
as are most of the LUCUS family.
The LUCUS family are of English origin, and were early settlers of Maryland.
MARTIN LUCUS, the father of our subject, was born in Maryland, a son of
JAMES LUCUS, and there he was reared to the occupation of a millwright,
he and his twin brother LUTHER, learning that trade in their youth. In
early manhood these two brothers went to Ohio where MARTIN married MARGARET
TURNER, a native of that State. To this union eleven children were born,
nine of whom reached maturity, six sons and three daughters: ADAM, living
in Cordova County, Minnesota; JAMES, in Tippecanoe County; LUTHER, the
subject of this sketch; WILLIAM of Shasta County, California; DAVID, of
Stockwell, this county; MARTIN, in Lafayette; REBECCA, deceased, wife of
DAVID S. BRELSFORD; MARGARET, wife of JOHN E. ROGERS, of Lauramie Township,
this county, and RACHEL, wife of GEORGE CISNA, of Lafayette.
In 1832 MARTIN LUCUS came to this county with his family accompanied by
PARSON WRIGHT, and together they entered 160 acres of prairie land on section
29, Sheffield Township, and also eighty acres of timber land elsewhere.
MR. LUCUS at once began the task of clearing and improving this land, converting
it into a fine farm, on which he lived until his death. His widow survived
him about twelve years, dying about the same age as her husband. There
were five sons and two daughters in the family of JAMES LUCUS, four of
the sons, named MARTIN, LUTHER, WILLIAM and JOHN, came to Tippecanoe County,
the other brother JAMES, living in Ohio until his death. A daughter, MARY,
married JOHN ARMSTRONG, and after her marriage came to this county. All
of these have passed away. MARTIN LUCUS was one of the well known citizens
of Tippecanoe County, and was a first-class millwright, to which trade
he gave much attention. He was a man of great physical frame, and possessed
of much force of character, as were all his brothers, all of whom became
honored citizens and useful members of society.
The first successful caesarean section in Indiana was performed on Luther's
wife Emma on November 6, 1880. Read the account and see the home in which
it was performed:
