Hi!
I wish to set the following record straight so I am posting this message in
several places.
From the Switzerland Co. GenWeb pages, I quote:
"Rogers, Stephen - b. 1760; d. 11/30/1846; bur. Long Run Cemetery. Married
1st Nancy ___ d. 1837. Ch. Henry, m. 1829 Lucinda Crandell; Stephen, m. 1822
Ruth Todd; Elizabeth, m. 1824 John Lock; Nancy, m. 1830 John Graham. Married
2nd Villa McPhearson Todd."
The marriage listed between John Graham and Nancy Rogers in 1830 is NOT the
marriage of Stephen's daughter. Rather it would undoubtedly be his
granddaughter's. Living in Switzerland Co. in the first half of the 1800's
were two John Grahams, father and son. Both of them married women named Nancy
Rogers. The elder John Graham was the Baptist preacher mentioned in Dufour's
Switzerland Co. book. His marriage to Nancy Rogers most likely occurred in or
around either Culpeper Co., VA, or Montgomery Co., KY. The younger John is my
gggrandfather. After marrying Nancy Rogers in 1830, my greatgrandfather,
Henry Rogers Graham, was born May 31, 1834, in Switzerland Co. Both
his death certificate and his Civil War records corroborate his place of
birth. Census records support this information. Later, both Johns ended up
living in Delaware County. The elder John died in Delaware Co.
The younger John moved on to Bartholomew Co., IN, where he married again after
the death of Nancy and later died. In a Bartholomew County History from 1879,
written when John Graham, Jr. was still living, I obtained the following
information:
"Graham, John, P.O. Hartsville, farmer, Sec.1; son of John Graham, who was
born in Pennsylvania in 1784, died in 1861, and Nancy Rogers, who was born in
Culpeper Co., VA, in 1788, died in 1863. Was born in Montgomery Co., Ky.,
March 19, 1810; settled in Hartsville Oct. 15,1863. Married July 29, 1830,
Nancy Rogers; she was born March 4, 1815, and died Oct. 4, 1871. Married,
Dec. 22, 1871, Mrs. Phebe Brown, nee Elrod; she was born in Orange Co., IN,
April 4, 1844; children--Henry R., born May 31, 1834; Lucy Jane, Sept. 4,
1836, died Oct. 10, 1838; Stephen H., born Nov. 26, 1839, died Feb. 17., 1841;
Mrs. Ann S. Clark, born July 12, 1842, died in March, 1873; Joseph, born Nov.
28, 1845; William D., Oct. 7 1848, died Feb. 9. 1850; Mary E., born March 24,
1850; Perry C., June 9, 1853, died Sept. 10, 1865; Edward H., born Oct. 5,
1855; John, Sept. 11, 1872; Alta May, March 8, 1874; Bertha Mabel, May 26,
1876."
Finally, I would be most happy to meet others researching these Graham or
Rogers lines.
Thanks,
Colette Ford
