BOWMAN HERITAGE IN SWITZERLAND COUNTY, IN
I am working on a biography of Isaac BOWMAN (1757-1826), son of George and
Mary (HITE) BOWMAN and the grandson of Jost HITE who brought settlers to the
Shenandoah Valley c1731 from PA. Included in the biography are Isaacs two
wives and 13 children.
Isaac's oldest surviving son was Philip BOWMAN (1786-1861) who moved to
Switzerland County, IN, around 1825 from Shenandoah County, VA with his wife
Isabella, nee RICHARDSON, and family.
I am seeking information on Philip BOWMAN's life in Indiana. I have names of
nine children and some of their probable marriages in Switzerland Co, IN, but
little else.
Any help would be most appreciated = especially related to:
1) The will and estate of Philip BOWMAN?
2) Any biographical information on this Indiana family?
3) Philips father (Isaac) was a lieutenant with Gen. George Rogers Clark in
the
Illinois Epic = Philip's uncle, Major Joseph BOWMAN, was in command of
the
forces that captured Vincennes in 1779 but he died from a powder
explosion.
Consequently the BOWMAN family received some 2000+ acres of land in
Indiana
from Gen. Clarks grant for the War service. The town of Jeffersonville,
IN, was part
of that grant. I'm interested to know if Philip was subsequently heir
to any of the
war grant acreage = Switzerland County land?.
4) There is evidence that Philip BOWMAN may have acquired a lumber mill in
or
near Switzerland County?
5) Is there a cemetery record in Switzerland County for these BOWMANs?.
6) Any noteworthy home or plantation recognized.?
7) Apparently some of Philips children married into the DORRELL, HARWOOD,
SEDAM, GILLION & ALLEN families.
Any and all information will be most appreciated.
