Theresa,
I was reading "A History of the New Liberty Baptist Church". [New Liberty
Baptist
Church is located in Switzerland County, IN.] This is not a book but several
papers
put together by a lady who attends this small country church. The McHenry
name
is mentioned here.
A few things stated are: (and I quote)
Joseph McHenry & his wife, Elizabeth (O'Neal) & Alexander Sebastian were
the
forefathers of this church.
Mr & Mrs McHenry were born in Pennsylvania. They moved to the Cumminsville
area of Cincinnati (Ohio) after they married abt. 1800. They moved again,
settling
in Cotton Twp., Switzerland Co., Indiana near Grants Creek, in 1818.
The first church was both church and school house. In 1841, it was decided
to
build a separate church, called the Free-Will Baptist Church. Amoung some
members
named of this church was the name "James McHenry".
Mrs. McHenry (known as Granny) lived to be 92 yrs old. Her son, James
McHenry,
took care of her. James died at age 86. He was a member of this church for
60 yrs.
Joseph McHenry was Justice of the Peace in Cotton Twp. In Sept, 1824, he
was County Commissioner of Switzerland Co. and served until 1831. James
McHenry
was a Justice of the Peace & witnessed the 1854 church deed.
Mr & Mrs Joseph McHenry's grandchild was the first to be buried in the New
Liberty
Church Cemetery. There is a marker placed near the center of the cemetery
for
"Baby Kruger". Seems Mrs. McHenry wanted the child buried close to her home.
On horseback, she brought the child back to Switzerland County from
Cumminsville,
Ohio. She dug the grave with a butcher knife.
I don't know if this is your line or not but interesting. This James was
born before
1857. You should check the Census for Switzerland County to see if Joseph
and James are listed with wife/children. Your James may descend from them.
Happy Hunting -
Linda
