I have conflicting information on a NETHERLAND, perhaps someone can figure
out what's wrong here:
A news article from an 1889 Carrollton, Kentucky newspaper states that
a Mrs. [Jane B. Owen] ROBINSON was the daughter of D. Green OWEN, the
grand-daughter of David OWEN of Carrollton, KY, and the great-grand
-daughter of a man that died in Virginia around 1790.
It also states that she is in possession of the will of her Grandmother,
dated before 1800 and probated 1804 in Gallatin County. It states that her
grandmother was the mother of the late Thurston P. NETHERLAND and that she
was the grandmother of William, John, and Joseph Netherland. Records show
that neither of her grandmothers died before 1807 is impossible, so I am
assuming that she has her GREAT-grandmother's will.
A review of two seperate compilations of early Gallatin County estates has
revealed no record that matches this information, even under a different name.
Karen Warren has written me that Thurston P. NETHERLAND, born 1791 in
Virginia was married to Sarah McINTIRE, a native of Londonderry, Ireland,
and that they married in Vevay in 1817 and were the parents of Joseph H.
NETHERLAND, born 1825 in Carrollton, KY. This matches the biography of
Joseph H. Netherland from HISTORY OF SWITZERLAND COUNTY, except it gives
his father's name as Christian P., rather than Thurston Netherland. I suspect
the named "Christian" is a misprint, but who were Thurston's parents?
My working theory at the moment is that a Mrs. Owen of Powhaton County,
Virginia, had a child, David Owen, born 1772 in Powhaton Co. After the
death of her husband Mr. Owen in 1790 she married a Mr. Netherland and
became the mother of Thurston P. Netherland, and moved with her family to
the area around Switzerland County, Indiana and Gallatin (now Carroll)
County, Kentucky. Also that her health began to fail and she wrote her
will before 1800, and that she died in 1804. The only Netherland in the
1800 Ky tax lists is Mary Netherland, in Gallatin County. Perhaps her
husband Mr. Netherland is also dead.
Who was she? What Owen was she married to? What Netherland?
I wonder if her will, though written in Kentucky, might have been probated
on the Indiana side of the river.
