Hi All,
In reply to Nancy--
Try the Switz. County Library first. They have index books on some of the
Courthouse record books. Look for your names in them. They will list the
book and page number to look for at the courthouse. They also have some of
the records on microfilm. I found more info at the library than at the
courthouse. The librarians are friendlier and more willing to help. I, too,
found little to no help at the courthouse. But--do go there! Not all the
records are indexed and you wouldn't want to miss going down
to the "dungeon"!
The library also has a book that lists all the old cemeteries in
Switzerland County and lists who is buried there.[Or the ones
that has headstones still there.] Interesting story--
A lady, don't recall her name, went all
around to the cemeteries and wrote down
all the names she could find in them. What a
treasure of a book she gave to us family head hunters.
Oh yeah! Don't forget to look in the genealogy
dept. registry book for other people who
might be searching for the same names you are.
[At the library] You should also sign this book.
I found a couple of contacts there.
Also, try the Health Dept. and, of course, the Historical Society.
Get a map of Switzerland County,[Can get one off internet--maybe off the
Switz. County homepage], and while you are running around to the
cemeteries, take a drive on some of the country roads. Really
pretty scenery! Drive careful though, some of the really
back-back roads are curvey with some prettygood
drop-offs. Do take a ride up the Ohio River to the Markland Dam.
It is past the little town of Markland. Cross the
river and go to the Kentucky side.
Just after you cross the river-
right straight in front of you- you see a park. Here,
you can walk up to the Dam locks and watch the boats
and barges pass through. Really pretty view!
I live in Jackson County, Indiana. My ancestors, the Mix and the Oak
families, came from Switz. County. I love to go there and
nose around. You will meet some really nice people.
Vevay is a SMALL town and most everything closes
on Sunday. Good day to run around.
GOOD LUCK!
Linda Mathis

Hi Nancy and All
At the court house, check out what they have on the main floor in the
records
dept. They were not very helpful to me last week. Guess they were too
busy.
Don't forget to see what they have in the basement. They said,
" There
are a lot of
old records there". When I found where it was I had to find every thing
myself.
Be prepared to spend a lot of time there as you will have to do
everything yourself
No one is there to help. I did find marriage record book that showed my
Joseph
NOBLE to Love Adams NORTON in 1818.
I got lots of help at the Historical Society, a big red brick
building at a
fork in the
main road comming from the east end of town. The cemetery is located on
that road
#156 at the east end of town. Farther east on the same route are
cemeteries at
the bridge crossing over to Kentucky. They call this Markland Dam(
Dam
39)
but the dam is gone now. This is also sometimes called Hastie
Cemetery.
From there go a little farther east to the Florence cemetery. All
three of
these
are right along Route 156 on the side of the road.
I remember seeing HOUZE in one of these cemeteries.
Good luck to
all
