I have both small and medium-sized photographs from Walton, the earliest I
can try to put a date on would be about 1871, if the the girl is correctly
identified and I am right about guessing her age. Others I can vaguely
identify as being in the 1870's and 1880's, including one of my
grandfather's sister, photographed as a baby and she was born in 1885.
I have none that say "Walton Studio," but I have several that just say
"WALTON, Vevay, Indiana" on the front only, with an elaborate "W." and
in
goldish lettering. Others are the same except for a line of gold asterisks
on the front. And the one I can identify as 1885 is the same on the front,
but the back is pink and it has two black lines and in the middle says:
J. E. Walton
Photographer
None of the Walton photos have tax stamps on the back, which is supposed to
indicate a period during the civil war.
Other designs I have from Walton include an early one that has "N.P.A." in
a black designed monogram, and below it:
J. E. Walton
Photographer
And one with a very elaborate design on the back, with the above wording
inside a drawing of a sign hanging off a plant on a table.
