My family has a deep history with riverboats. I am trying to find what
boats they worked. My mother has passed down pictures of the City of
Cincinatti and the family story is that one or more members of the McGuire,
Marshall, and Burton families worked this boat. I have been told that
members of the McGuire, Marshall, and Burton families have been cooks,
pilots, captains, and first mates.
Do any of my fellow Switzerland County list mates have a clue as to where
to look for records for officers and crew of Ohio River boats?
Here are the known "boatmen":
McGuire, Ambrose
occupation: boatman
source:1860 Census: Florence & York townships, Switzerland County, Indiana
McGuire, Doc
occupation: cook
source: family history
Marshall, E. D. (probably Dormond)
occupation: river pilot
source: 1860 Census: Florence & York townships, Switzerland County, Indiana
source: 1850 Census: York Township, Switzerland County, Indiana
Marshall, Dorwin
occupation: river pilot
source: 1860 Census: Florence & York townships, Switzerland County, Indiana
Burton, William Marshall
also known as "Captain Bill"
occupation: first mate of the City of Cincinatti; run from Madison to
Cincinatti
source: family history
These families lived around Florence, Vevay, and other river towns in and
around Switzerland County, Indiana.
I would sure appreciate any help you could offer. I am very intested in
anyone who connects into these families too.
