FIRE AT MADISON
________
Causes a $70,000 Loss to Hargans
Wholesale Establishment and
Klein's Saloon
________
A fire which started some place in the rear of Hargan & Co.'s
wholesale grocery, some say in Henry A. Klein's kitchen, at 11:30
o'clock this foremoon raged with great fury for a solid hour with the
result of gutting of the big establishment and the destruction of
goods valued in the neighborhood of fifty thousand dollars. The water
supply in the city reservoir was sixteen feet and the public cisterns
were well filled, enabling the engines to do good and effective
service, but the plug streams appeared to be weak for a time. This,
Chairman of the Water Committee Harper says, was owing to somebody
making a wrong turn, which was soon made right.
The heat was so intense it was with great difficulty the flames
were kept from the adjoining buildings below Henry A. Klein Co., on
the west and the A. L. Schmidlap residence across the alley on the
north. In fact the Odd-Fellows' Building and the People's Bank across
Mulberry street on the east were threatened for a time, and it was
only by the most heroic exertions of the fire department under the
command of Chief James Hargan that the flames were kept from leaping
across the street and sweeping the business block above Mulberry on
Main. Klein's stock was removed in a greatly damaged condition and
the building, owned by Mr. George Kleinhentz, was badly wercked.
The aggregate loss will approximate $75,000; less than one-half
insured.
