This one is dated - 1908
Nora Scudder, the subject of this sketch was born near Markland,
in Switzerland County, Indiana, on the 17th day of November 1887, and
departed this life at the home of her parents, D. N. Scudder and wife,
in Ohio County Indiana, on the 21st day of April 1908, aged 20 years,
5 months and 4 days.
On the 25th day of December, 1905, she was united in marriage with
Mr. Rolland Layton, of Greenfield, Indiana, to which union there was
born one child, who at an early age is thus deprived of a mother's
care and attention, but who will be kinly cared for by the father and
other loving relatives under the direction and guidance of Him who
said "Suffer little children to come unto me and forbid them not."
In addition to her husband and baby, she leaves father, mother,
bhree brothers, five sisters and a host of relatives and friends to
mourn their loss.
Six years ago in the same month in which she died, she united with
the Baptist church at Liberty, in Switzerland County Indiana, at which
place her funeral was conducted by Rev. W. S. Lowe, the minister who
received her into the church.
She was converted in March 1908 and before her death was santified
and testified to her friends that she was fully prepared to go hence
and be with her Savior.
In addition to the spiritual preparation, she made all
arrangements for her funeral. For about a year she had been a
constant sufferer, during which affliction she was always patient and
careful not to give her friends unnecessary trouble.
During her last sickness everything that loving friends and kind
neighbors could do was done to relieve her suffering and to make her
stay on earth as pleasant as could be under suc affliction.
In this time of sad bereavement we find consolation in
contemplating the words of jesus when he said:
"I am the resurrection and the life; he that believeth in me,
though he were dead, yet shall he live; and whosoever loveth and
believeth in me shall never die."
"Then there fell upon the house a sudden gloom,
A shadow on those features fair and thin;
And softly, from that hushed and darkened room,
Two angels issued, where but one went in."

This one is date 1904:
Nancy Jane Howard, daughter of John W. and Aletha March-Howard,
was born Dec. 7th, 1836 and died Feb. 8th, 1904. She was one of a
family of ten children, seven of whom survive her and five were
present to render the last tribute of respect to the eldest sister.
On Sept. 29th, 1858, she was united in marriage to Joseph Patterson.
This union was blessed with five children, three sons and two
daughters: Ira, William and Thos. Patterson, Mrs. Chas. Olcott, and
Miss Lydia Patterson, all of whom survive but one son, William. An
invalid for seven years she endured her suffering with uncomplaining
fortitude. Her beloved companion for forty-six years, in life's joys
and sorrows, with the sons and daughters so tenderly nurtured with the
protecting kindness which only a mother's love can bestow, are left to
mourn for one so dearly beloved. The affectionate and tender manner
with which her husband and children cared for her every want was an
evidence of how heavily the blow fell on their grief stricken hearts.
Peace which passeth understanding,
Joy the world can never give,
Now in Jesus I am finding
In His smiles of love I live.
A large number of sorrowing relatives and friends gathered at the home
near here where Rev. J. C. Tedford, of the Vevay Babtist church, spoke
words of consolation to the bereaved ones, after which the remains
were interred in the cemetery at Florence. Among those present from a
distance were James Howard, Mrs. Reuben Pollard, of Greenwood Ind.,
Mr. and Mrs. Gus Hatton and two sons of Long Run; Joseph Ramseyer of
Mount Sterling; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Olcott, of Lawrenceburg; Mr. and
Mrs. John Wiley and two daughters, of Vevay; Mrs. Samuel Stoops, of
East Enterprise; Mr. and Mrs. Ed Brent, of near Center Square; Miss
Afra Hatton and Sidney Bersot, of Long Run. The floral offerings were
many and beautiful.
