Mr. Davis, back on 6-23-01 you responded to a question, on the
INSWITZE-L@rootsweb site, Vol. 1 Issue 21, from Philip Naff, concerning
ferries that cross the Ohio at Vevey/Ghent. My mother's father lived in
Florence, IN, across from Warsaw and my family rode the ferry across many
time when I was a child. Also, remember when the the ferry was shut down
after the Markland Dam was completed. I enjoyed those rides across the
river as much as visiting with my grand-father, Willie Wiechert and his
sister Emma Wiechert.
Anyway, you mentioned, in the response to that e-mail, someone who was in
the process of or has written a history on the ferries. Were you able to
find any information on this. I would like to know who this may be so I can
get a copy of this information. Mush of my mother's maternal side of the
family was and is from the Owen, Gallatin, Switzerland and Ohio counties.
Kentucky men married Indiana women and vice versa. Some families that lived
in KY moved to IN later. I seem that the Warsaw/Florence ferry was a
favored crossing.
Recently, I was fortunate to visit with the daughter-in-law of Salon Irons,
Geni, wife of Caleb Irons. During that visit she mention that Salon Irons
ran the ferry between Florence and Warsaw and lived in a house on the hill
above the ferry dock on the Florence side. Salon was my grandmother's
Uncle.
Geni, also mentioned a Judge Ricketts who may have been related to Salon
(cousin?). Judge Ricketts's mother or sister may have been my
gg-grandfather's wife. I don't know if he was from the Indiana or Kentucky
side of the Ohio. If any one out there would know anything about the Judge
& his wife I would welcome any information they could give me.
Thanks so much for your help,
Judy LeClaire

There were ferries at Ghent and Warsaw that shut down when the Markland Dam
opened. It essentially cut off an 170-year relationship between Ghent and
Vevay.
I received a message saying the Vevay school teacher who was gathering info
on ferries was actually Ginny Reeves, a librarian at the Switzerland County
High School.
That's all I know about it. I don't know if she completed her project or
published or any more about it.
Good Luck,
Bill Davis
