I'm researching a Hutchison family that might have come from Switzerland
Co, IN in the 1800s.
While digging for clues about my ggg-grandfather Joseph Hutchison (b.
Jul 1841, Shelby Co., IN, d. abt 12 Mar 1905 or 1906, Barton Co., MO, m.
Tobitha McCance 18 Aug 1861), I found the following family in the 1860
Federal Census in Shelby Co., IN (dwelling 319, family 279):
John Hutcheson (age 55, male, born in Stokes Co., NC)
Delilah Hutcheson (age 56, female, born in Stokes Co., NC)
Jenetta Hutcheson (age 28, female, born in Switzerland Co., IN)
Sarah Hutcheson (age 26, female, born in Switzerland Co., IN)
Lucinda Hutcheson (age 22, female, born in Switzerland Co., IN)
Floyd Hutcheson (age 19, male, born in Switzerland Co., IN)
Smith Hutcheson (age 17, male, born in Switzerland Co., IN)
Joseph Hutcheson (age 17, male, born in Shelby Co., IN)
The age listed for this Joseph is close enough to my data that I thought
perhaps this is my Joseph and he's living with his uncle's family.
Tonight while updating my family file I found some letters written in
the 1940s which state that Joseph had brothers named Floyd and Smith and
sisters named Lucinda and Sarah (and one other; don't recall the name
now). While it was exciting, it conflicts with the nativity of Joseph
Hutcheson listed in the census data above, especially if the ages are
correct. The letters themselves are somewhat confusing so more facts are
needed.
Are there any birth records for the early/mid 1800s available for
Switzerland Co., or is anyone else researching this Hutchison family?
There is no death record available for Joseph Hutchison so I have no
other information about his ancestors at this point. I'm hoping this
census record gives me a link. Thanks for any assistance.
