Dear Friends -
Over the past week, I have learned that my name, my husband's name and the
names of my children are on genealogists personal web pages. Some have given
the full dates and places of our births and my marriage and some have not.
Those web sites that I have found information on my family I have immediately
emailed and requested that the information be removed immediately as I did
not give permission for this information to be put up on a site. ESPECIALLY
that of my two young children.
I am sending out this email as a gentle reminder to people to please do not
post information about living people on your web site without their
permission. What a shock to find your name out there. I know it is public
information if you go to city hall, court house, state or national archives,
but that is different than publicizing it on a web site.
For example, depending on someone's employment, it could be harmful. What I
mean by that is, someone in law enforcement probably would not want his or
her name out there with that of their spouse, children, parents for safety
purposes.
A woman from one of the WV lists I am on recently posted asking if someone
would do a lookup on a FTM CD because SHE was on it and wanted to know what
was said about her. TODAY I found out I'm on an FTM CD! Needless to say,
I'm not happy about this!
PLEASE, I emplore you to think before you type and then hit the "publish"
key. DO NOT, DO NOT put information out there on people who are living
without their permission. In my opinion it is just wrong.
I write this letter with the utmost of respect, but I just had to get this
off my chest.
Sincerely,
Cindy Kostka
