Thank you to all who responded to my inquiry about obtaining a copy of Wanda
Morford's book of Switzerland County, Indiana, cemetery inscriptions! What a
wonderful response. Thanks to jpickett(a)dupuisgroup.com, I have learned that
the book is "supposedly" available online through barnesandnoble.com. Their
website states that the book is a special order, $42.50 plus postage and
handling, and that it must be ordered directly from the publisher. In the
event the book is out of print (which I understand it is) and if the publisher
has no copies available, they will notify me within one to two weeks.
Otherwise, the book should ship within three to five weeks. I have ordered it
and will be happy to do look-ups for anyone interested. I will notify this
listserv when (and if!) I have the book in hand, hopefully within a month.
Additionally, Ablue(a)ykc.com has advised that an individual in Indiana is in
the process of updating Wanda Morford's book which apparently missed some
inscriptions. I am reluctant to reveal the e-mail address of that individual
here for fear of swamping her with unsolicited e-mail, but I will bcc this
posting to her and perhaps we will all learn when/how/if a copy of her book
will be available. There is obviously much interest in it. Again, thanks to
all of you who responded so promptly with information, advice, and offers of
look-ups.

A couple of weeks ago I obtained from this list the following information
concerning a book containing inscriptions from cemeteries throughout
Switzerland County:
Morford, Wanda L.
> * Switzerland County, Indiana, cemetery inscriptions, 1817-1985 /
> Wanda L. Morford. -- Cincinnati, Ohio : W.L. Morford, 1986.
> viii, 512 p. : ill. ; 27 cm.
> ISBN 0-9616543-0-9
I have since learned that the book is out of print and the author is deceased.
Does anyone have any idea where I might locate/purchase a copy of the book?
Interested in either purchase or borrow. Thanks.
Loraine Andress

My line is Lancaster DOUGLASS, brother of Jackson G. Douglass whose bio
appears on page 1208 of the History of Switzerland County, Indiana 1885. They
are sons of John and Hannah (DOUGLASS) Douglass who were from Halifax County,
VA. The family migrated from VA to Ohio and then to Switzerland County in
1818.
I would love to know which county in Ohio they lived (from approximately
1806/1810 to 1818) .
Lancaster Douglass, b.abt 1800 in VA married Elizabeth THOMAS or THOMPSON
b.abt 1815 in OH. Their children that I know about were born between approx.
1831 and 1846 in this order:
John, George Washington, Newton(?), Hiram, Richard, Rosanna, Francis Marion.
I'm interested in learning more about any of them, but my line is:
George Washington Douglass (b. abt 1832 IN, d. abt 1899 AR) who married
Marrena REX in 1850 in Boone County, KY. The children I know about are:
Rilla (Pricilla?) Douglass
Mary E. Douglass
Prudie Douglass.
Marrena (Rex) Douglass died in 1871. It appears from the 1870 census for
Switzerland County, that Rilla Douglass was living with a MCINTIRE family as a
servant and that Mary and Prudie Douglass, still young, were living with a
James and Maria DOUGLAS along with other children: Eli and Benjamin G. I
don't know who this James and Maria Douglass were. Could Maria Douglas be a
sister of Marrena REX Douglass?
Mary E. Douglass is my line and she married Elisha LAMKIN.
If anyone has any connection or knowledge of any of these people, please email
me.
Thanks!

The family I am researching is that of Lancaster Douglas(s). He is the
brother of Jackson G. Douglass whose bio appears on page 1208 of the History
of Switzerland County, Indiana 1885.
I would like to request a lookup from the 1860 census for Switzerland County
for the following names which could be spelled Douglas, Douglass, Duglas,
Daglas:
Lancaster Douglass
George Douglass
Newton Douglass
John Douglass (since there is probably more than one, this one would have been
approximately age 28 on this census.]
Thanks in advance for any help!
I will list more about this family in a separate posting.

I believe Susanna & Pete's last child Moses died before his father,
which is inddiczged by his will in 1851. However another source picked
them up in the 1860 census.
My question, were there two Moses?

Am looking for someone to please do a 1850 & 1860 Switzerland Co. IN census
look-up for any DAVIS surname. I found a marriage of my DAVIS/BROWN in
Switzerland & some of my DAVISES & BROWNS may be over there to. I say over
there because they were born in KY Carroll County across the river. I
really appreciate it, Thanks. If there are to many of them I am partically
interested in finding Claiborne & Cleveland DAVIS.
Tracy,
Have you tried Wanda Morford's book on cemetery inscriptions
in Switzerland County? An inscription is not as good as an obituary,
but it is better than nothing. You can sometimes infer family
relations from nearby graves too.

Dear Tracy,
As far as I know there is no book of obituaries -- the closest thing I can
(vaguely) recall is some sort of scrapbook which I believe included obits.
but it was pretty limited in its scope. Your best bet would be to look up
the obit in the *Reveille* (I think I've spelled that correctly). If I am
not mistaken the Switzerland County Public Library in Vevay has the
complete run of the paper on micro-film, but I don't know if they do
look-ups. You might also contact the Health Office to see if they happen
to have an obit. for this fellow already in their files. Another option
would be to see if you could have it copied by the Newspaper Division of
the Indiana State Library in Indianapolis -- they also have a complete run
of the *Vevay Reveille* on microfilm. In fact, I believe that the State
Library will loan microfilmed newspapers, but you will need to contact
them directly to find out for certain. If you want them to look it up for
you, however, I imagine that you will need to have the complete date of
death. Finally I should probably warn you that Newspaper Obits in
Switzerland County from as back as 1905 may not give you much information.
My own experience with obits. from that era is pretty mixed -- sometimes
they prove to be a goldmine of information and other times they don't say
much of anything. Good Luck.

I am searching for an obituary for an ancestor that died in 1905 in
Switzerland county and is buried in the Ebenezer Cemetery in Craig township.
Who would I contact for a copy of this obituary? The name of the person is
Daniel Kunkle. I do not have an exact date of death. Is there some book
that lists the obituaries?
