The plate, shown in earlier post has been relisted on eBay # 191484265504 -- closes early
tomorrow.
Was entirely handpainted in Germany, and imported by the John H. Roth Co. of Peoria,
better known as Jonroth. They specialized in souvenir china. No decals involved, plate
was entirely handpainted. Normally they did views of historical sites (Mount Vernon,
Monticello, various court houses, etc.), sometimes in fairly large quantities. There are
a few views of famous historical sites which are quite common.
However, portraits like these, of the Hollister children, were very rare, and very
expensive, not only to produce, for the Jonroth customer. And it had to be an important
Jonroth customer for John H. Roth, Sr. to even take the time/trouble to have his German
workshop produce it. Only other ones that I know exist were done of the Roth children.
It's really tragic that this was lost from the family, or from the local historical
society. If anyone knows anyone in the Hollister family still existing in Indiana, hope
they can track down this piece -- if not sold (asking $29.95 plus shipping) should be
returned to the Hollister family.
