Robert E. Dashel, Sr. Feb. 13, 1927 March 3, 2000 Mr. Robert Edward Dashel, Sr., 73, of
Yankee Street, Niles, Mich., died following an extended illness at 4:20 a.m. on Friday,
March 3, in Memorial Hospital, South Bend, Ind. Mr. Dashel was born on Feb. 13, 1927, in
South Bend, to Robert William and Jenny (Straight) Dashel. He enjoyed telling about his
life beginning at the South Bend Country Club which his parents managed, and his birth was
in the manager's residence. Bob later was himself employed at the country club, but
eventually was retired in 1983 from the Tucker Freight Line. About that time he moved to
Niles and was employed by the Niles Township Police Department as a school crossing guard
at Seventeenth & Ferry streets, and by the Berrien Springs Police Department in its
maintenance division. He was a member of the First Church of God, Niles, and of the
Decolores Ministries of Southwest Michigan. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in
the U.S. Army Corps of En!
gineers, and was a member of Teamsters Union Local 364. On Feb. 27, 1981, in South Bend,
he was married to the former Dolores J. (Bennitt) Sheeley, who survives. He is also
survived by his children, Robert E. Dashel, Jr., of Mishawaka, Ind., Suzanne Schroff of
Elkhart, Ind., Burton Sheeley, Jr., of South Bend, Bruce Sheeley, Bonnie Dodd and Sharon
Fernwalt, all of Niles; 22 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and by his brother,
William Ernest Ellsworth of South Bend. Mr. Dashel was preceded in death by his son (and
Bruce's twin), Bernard Sheeley on Nov. 22, 1997; his brothers, Kenneth Robert Dashel
and Robert Ellsworth; and by his sisters, Charlotte Marie Lundsford and Dorothy Vida.
Funeral services for Mr. Robert E. Dashel, Sr., will be at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, March 6,
in the Halbritter Funeral Home, Niles, with the Rev. Robert E. Jackson of the First Church
of God officiating. Committal services will follow in the funeral home, with a
veteran's flag presentation !
by American Legion Commander John McLaughlin. Entombment in the Wall o
f Honor Mausoleum at Saint Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger, Ind., will be at a later
date. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral
home.
