For those with family from southeast St Joseph county, possibly your older relatives
mentioned CLAUDVILLE and you've wondered where it was.
The intersection of New Road and Beech Road, three miles west and two miles north of
Wakarusa, was known as CLAUDVILLE. It seemed to be the center of activity for this section
of Madison Township, consisting of a blacksmith shop and at times, other business
enterprises. There were ice cream socials most Saturday nights during summer months and
some Saturdays there were dances.
A postoffice was established in Claudville in Jul 1898.
Peter Brenneman operated the Claudville creamery ca 1909.
There was a Claudville school with 60 or more pupils.
A department store was in operation from 1910 to 1911 or later.
Jesse Hawkins ran the blacksmith shop; later his shop became a General Blacksmithing and
Wood Work Shop.
